Well that's a higher level of agreement then I would normally get from my wife
I never said that the sadir should not also field newer tank models. But this does not mean that all of the new tanks have to be in sadir units. The next Merkava4 units should indeed be reserve battalions (as was reported in the openning post) that utilise the newly released 401soldiers that are (hopefully) well experienced with this model
As reserve units are still an integral part of the IDF in any full war scenario, new models would still be utilized when they are most needed
Either the Magach7 is capable of combat today or it isn't. If it is, then a sadir unit can also employ it, especially in against enemies like Gaza/Lebanon. If it isn't, then disband those reserve units and recycle the metal
As long as a tank will continue to be used in reserve units, it should also be in sadir usage to produce well trained manpower
I know that it would hurt their egos, why not add a Magach7 battalion to Hativa7. This would at least enable keeping the 105mm gun and 900HP engine tanks in one sadir brigade
We are talking about just enough soldiers to maintain the existing reserve units (ie replace the old guys that are released), not to raise new units
The people in the manpower or operations branch get paid - let them figure out the proper amount of sadir soldiers that will be necessary to field the number of reserve units desired in the upcoming years
Like I said before, badly trained crews are also costly and create comples issues (remember the performance of the units with the cutting-edge Merkava4 during the Saluki river crossing
You would be a better judge of that than me, but remember that before Lebanon2, the IDF also felt it was sufficient to have sadir crews train on tanks only 3weeks a year and have reserve crews train only a week once every 3years! Compare this to the three weeks of training a year that reserve tanks crews received in the 70s!
I owe you this reply from an old Namer thread:
As someone who was retrained in the reserves into a 81mm mortar crew, given your quantity of training and practice, let me ask you how confident do you feel your crew would be able to provide quick and effective close (within 50m) fire support to friendly soldiers in an emergancy? How confident would you feel if you were on the other end and had to call in such support from crews that received the amount of training that you got and didn't even have the benefit of some sadir experience to fall back on
!?
