What were Barack Obama's grades in college?
It is difficult to say. Barack Obama has not released transcripts for his grades from Occidental College, Columbia University and Harvard Law. He has also not released his SAT and LSAT scores. In fairness, it should be noted that not releasing personal documents does not mean the candidate is hiding anything: in fact, throughout history, many candidates have decided not to release their transcripts, even when their grades were good. And it should also be noted that under federal privacy laws, candidates are under no obligation to release their grades.
There have been some newspaper opinion pieces, especially one in the Wall Street Journal (September 11, 2008), "Obama's Lost Years," which made negative assertions and speculations about then-candidate Obama's time at Occidental and at Columbia. There have also been printed opinion pieces that suggested he was admitted to Harvard because of Affirmative Action. But none of these claims has ever been proved.
What we do know, from Obama's own writings, is that he was a very ordinary student as an undergraduate, and not entirely focused on academics. But at some point, he resolved whatever personal issues were troubling him, and began to get better grades; one of his professors at Columbia has told the press that Mr. Obama was an "A" student and wrote an outstanding term paper, which supports what the president wrote about doing better in subjects in which he had the most interest, such as Political Science. But once he was admitted to Harvard Law School, he did extremely well: Obama graduated Magna Cum Laude, which, according to the Harvard Law School website, is awarded to the top 10% of the school's students. He was also elected President of the Law Review, an honor that the school says is given to a student seen to have great potential for the legal field.
