BEIJING – A fire sparked by construction workers damaged an historic synagogue in the north China city of Harbin on Thursday, the Xinhua news agency reported. The building, dating from the 1920s when the city boasted a Jewish community of more than 20,000, was undergoing restoration work before reopening as a museum of Jewish history and culture, the agency said.
Thursday's blaze destroyed nearly half of the newly restored dome, it added.
Jews began moving to Harbin in the late 19th century to escape persecution in Tsarist Russia and other European countries. Their numbers swelled after the Russian Revolution and ensuing civil war.
The Harbin New Synagogue, built in 1921, was the biggest in the Far East with a floor area of 1,233 sq metres and room for 800 worshippers.
