I think that Pashut Shiryoner meant that #1 (the yellow tank with red arrow around it, on blue background) is the tag of the former tiran6 brigade

320brigade??

That's an interesting observation. The arrow in the Eshet tag does resemble a "6" or a "tet" and the tank definitely looks like a round soviet type.

However, in this history page that I captured from the now defunct eshet130.com website, you can see that Eshet was first formed in 1974 under the number 767 and equipped with M60 tanks. Additionaly, it says that under this number it fought in the Bakaa in the 1982 war. Thus it is impossible that Eshet was the Tiran6 brigade

Hi b.a,

Thanks for clarifying this old mystery

I always thought that it was strange that an IDF unit established after the 56 Suez war would choose such a uniquely North American animal as it's symbol like the Bison (Buffalo). Now that you have explained that this was the symbol of the "new" Hativa 14, I'm guessing that it had something to do with the new armor unit being equipped with American Patton tanks

Do you have any idea why they decided to use the number 14 for the new tank brigade while the name and emblem stayed with 670? To confuse the enemy?

From what book is the page you scanned and where can I find it?

Was Natke's Hativa 217 also related to Kiryati?
62 The Sniper " ?!?!"
What happened to Kiryati? I know that Hativa4 was a mechanized brigade (hermesh) that fought in 1973 on the Golan Heights.

Yet I found a photo of a monument for Hativa166 with the emblem for Kiryati on it near Machane Yarden on the Golan.
But surprisingly, after cheking some of the names on it in izkor website, they turn out to all be from Natke Nir's 217brigade of 1973
Does anyone know what was the relationship between Hativa217 and Kiryati?
What ever happened to Hativa217 after the war?
'126 tank battalion from Hativa217 was transfered to the new sadir Hativa211
'113 tank battalion from Hativa217-- I found listed under Hativa459 http://www.idf.il/atal1/izkor/main.asp?nid=3341
' 142 (and 134) I found listed under ' 645 -,during 1982
of Yom-Tov Tamir's Ugda880 .

Finally, was this the emblem of Hativa 217: (Hativa520 in 1967)?

If I recall correctly, b.a said that in 1975 Menachem Einan was appointed as commander of Hativa Merkavot Ha Barzel --the 670 mech brigade in 1973 (that itself was split off from Hativa 14) -- when it was converted from a mech brigade into an all-tank (Centurion) armor brigade.

So I wonder if gdud113 was infact transfered to Hativa 670/459 after the war and 217 disbanded?

Can anyone figure out this mess?

I understand your concerns, however the artillery unit tags photographed in this discussion are from a public display. There is no reference in it whether a unit is active, its organization, or the unit number. You have to assume that if it was approved for public display, any of our neighbors proffessionally-interested already knows about it.
Same goes for the 847 emblem which I saw displayed, along with all the flags of all other armor units openly displayed in another public museum. Though the unit number 847 wasn't mentioned there, I allowed myself to write it here because the name and number of that unit was well published in the media during last summer's war .
Even here:
I have a feeling that the open information useful to the enemy is already available to the enemy from regular published information like newspapers, books (I discovered the symbol of Uri Or's unit from his recent book) and various official IDF photos and reports. Much more is available internationally. And don't forget that reportedly Bashir is fond of surfing on the Internet.
a ab
In the end, I think that the only ones that we are keeping the emblems/names of our units secret from is from ourselves .
Even the IAF doesn't erase the squadron symbols from the airplane photos anymore

And look what I just found in an interesting article about Israel armor vs ATGMs in Lebanon2 on a Russian website

http://mdb.cast.ru/mdb/2-2007/item2/item1/
:
All in all, four division headquarters and 17 Israeli Army brigades (six armoured, seven infantry and four airborne) took part in battle, though not all were up to full combat strength. Over 30,000 Israeli servicemen and up to 400 main battle tanks were directly engaged in battle on Lebanese soil, and the tanks were all Merkava models made in Israel. Of the six armoured brigades, two brigades (7th and 847th) were equipped with the Merkava Mk 2 model, three brigades (188th, 434th and 673rd) with the Merkava Mk 3 model, and one brigade (401st) with the most advanced Merkava Mk 4 model. Of the seven infantry brigades, two (1st and 609th) were equipped with Achzarit heavy armoured personnel carriers, converted from Soviet T-55 tanks seized from Arab forces in the wars of 1967 and 1973

Give or take some minor errors, I'd say that they know more than the interested Israeli public does.

No, 366 is a different ugda with this tag:

The orange "lightning bolt" tag belongs to another ugda also currently called Amud HaEsh -- see photos in post #83. The name and tag belonged to Arik Sharon's ugda 143 in the Yom Kippur war

By the way, do you know what was the name of Dan Laner's Ugda 210 during the Yom Kippur war ?

That's exactly what I thought when I first saw the tag. However, the "totem pole" looked more like a tank on the emblem that I saw printed on a paper.

Which is the original Givati tag?
158 double_o " . ..."
:
double_o
. .

So which is the real tag of the original Hativa Givati 1948-1956? The one on the right above, or the one with the tree posted by Strong11?:

The one with the tree seems to match a description that OfferD once wrote in a different discussion:

:
( )
5 () , "" () .
( ) . 424 - ( 424 - 519 ) ( ) .

60

If so, is the original Givati tag still the tag of today's reserve Hativa5?

After rereading your description of the original Givati5 tag, I realized that there is no sword in this mystery tag

However I found two other modern tags for that do bare a resemblence to it, so maybe it does have sonmething to do with the Southern Command :

CLARIFICATION PLEASE

I have a few questions:

1. At the begining of this thread, in your own message (#4), the very first TAG was identified as CHETZ, in message #13 by Pashut Sherioner. Now you identify another TAG as being CHETZ. Can you explain this please.

2. '656 "?

Do you have a name for it?

3. Some of your tags seem to be very large, and on metal. I also notice a few others in the background. Could you tell us what these are

Zeev

P.S. My compliments on the beautiful images.

Zeev,

The photos and names noted in my post above are from a public display of armor unit emblems at the Latrun museum

You got a problem
231 zragon13 "[QUOTE=The Meyvn]I have a few..."
Zragon13, who are you gonna believe? Your own eyes or Rabbi Itzchaki's word?h

But seriously, we now have 2 different tags, both claiming to be that of Utzbat Chetz, and then, one tag with two different names: Karnei Re'em and Kochavei HaEsh. Answeres anyone?h

And then, once in Latrun, did you not find the answers to some of our other mysteries? such as Tags numbers 7,8,12 of your own list at the very beginning of this thread?.

And can somebody tell me which tag is being referred to as Utzbat Tzur, Eged 286 in posts #79,#80,#81 above?

The image you brought us for Utzbat Etgar is indeed lovely, but not half as beautiful as Arie's ARTISTIC MASTERPIECE in post 101. Talk about Art 101.

Lastly, is your image of Netiv HaEsh, Ugdah 210, one and the same as the monochromatic one in Arie's post #88? huh

Thanks in advance

I believe it is. I only saw it once before, pinted black on white on a form

I had previously touched-up Arie's picture to resemble what I remembered it to look like: I

I guess that my memory is not as good as it used to be

Also, if I remember correctly, in Latrun the following was titled as Lahav

Hi Arie,

Sorry for my error.
I remembered looking for it and reading the name. Do you know what is the name of 395? I should have writen it down

It's strange how in many cases, the graphic elements appearing in the emblem have so little in commen with the unit names. For example, I would expect the tag of a unit called lahav--like the one below from your link, to include some sort of knife or sword instead of lightning bolts and wings.

Also are there really not enough words and imagination not to use the same names for multiple units?

Thanks and you're correct! The name under that emblem was indeed Bnei-Reshef, and that's the name I was told by a guy there but I had forgotten it

The inscription Utzba Yehuda belongs to the emblem behind it--not the one in the photo

The emblem itself is a standing lion on a red background and appears in the post by Strong11 above titled ( )

Sorry I'm not familiar with any tags of nafach or mechoz but I found some interesting explanations of these district terms:

My guess is that the tag identified above as "Naftali" is that of the mechoz "galil ha-tichon" (not nafa) from where Hativa Alexandroni was originally recruited from and stationed. See the figure here http://www.hagana.co.il/show_item.a...d=99&itemtype=0

tag of mechoz haifa?

This might be another one:

from http://www.fresh.co.il/vBulletin/sh...930#post2793654

IRIR thinks that this was the inspiration for the well-known tag of Hativa188 Barak.

If so, it might explain why in several sources I've read that Hativa188 adopted the
tag of Carmeli (inc the official IDF site) - while in fact the real Carmeli tag is the one used by the current reserve infantry Hativa2/165

Perhaps there is some confusion between the tag of Hativa Carmeli and the tag of the Mechoz from which Carmeli came from -- Mechoz Haifa?

BTW, I always getting the "ayin" "hay" and "yud" mixed up

?So which is the true tag of the Etzioni Brigade:

from the Machal monument near Burma Road

and in color:

or from the graphic that you posted above

and the current Jerusalem brigade

BTW, I guess that I mislead you about the tag of Mechoz Haifa. Somewhere above in this long thread IRIR has already identified the following as it's tag

:

This makes me think that maybe the reason that only some of the 1948 brigades are shown in the old b&w poster in post http://www.fresh.co.il/vBulletin/sh...338#post2529046 is because it only includes units the fought in the northern/Haifa front?

Hi cre666,

I went and rechecked my records, and there seems to be some conflicting information about which units were derived from the 1948 Etzioni brigade and whether the origin of Hativa14 is from 4-Kiryati or 6-Etzioni

Indeed the Hativa14 web page that you linked to says that it originated from Etzioni...

But the book about Ugdat Hamapatz says (look at the scanned red page in one of b.a.'s posts above):

1959 " (58 -83) ' , (52) " 7.

Also the info in the defunct Ugda Yehuda website says this about the 310Jerusalem brigade's origins:

310 ". -1948. " " " ".

I think that the Jerusalem brigade was established almost immediately after the 1948 war. It was mentioned in several places that Arik Sharon, as a student after the war, served in the Jerusalem brigade as a reserve officer at the time he was recruited to create Unit 101. 1953?

If you look at the sadak tables by Siman Tov Sagi, you see that the Jerusalem brigade already appears during 1956. Furthermore, some of the numbers of its 61, 62, 68 battalions show a clear relationship to Etzioni's battalions.

The number 14 also seems to relate more to Hativa 4 than 6

Take a look at some of the info I gathered on these units in the following sadak table that incorporates Siman Tov's sadak with info from other open sources:
